pin ballena franca austral EDICIONES DE LA MONTAÑA
ARGENTINA
ok, this is the longest description of the animals; we got carried away. choose this pin to start (or expand, if you're like us) your marine animals collection.
the Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) is a natural national monument in Argentina (yeah, a living natural monument!). they are "ecosystem engineers" part given they participate in the phenomenon called the "whale pump", where they go down the ocean to feed; as they come back up to breathe, they circulate the nutrients and at the surface do gigantic poos (nutrients) fertilizing the phytoplankton and who then release oxygen to you and me, amongst other incredible things! like many other whales, it was on the brink of extinction due to commercial whaling but the threats they face today are linked to their environment pollution. the most important breeding ground (in terms of numbers) is in Península Valdés, a peninsula into the Atlantic Ocean in the Chubut Province of Argentina.
