the three stories Mariana has gathered in this book should be read quickly and straight through. this is recommended because, almost certainly, she consulted her “trusted metamorphologist” while writing them. hence, she challenges us with diffuse realities and shifting creatures that reinvent themselves right before our eyes. the rarefied atmospheres and strange situations found in these narratives—seasoned, here and there, with touches of “paprika of laughter”—appear to be the result of “prudently unusual approximations” of “sufficiently different words,” much as the writer Gianni Rodari defined his own inventive binomials. indeed, our author always keeps this particular seasoning close at hand—both when she writes, and when she spices up the books she shares with the young readers at the school library where she works.
